Parents of Same-Sex Attracted and LGBTQ Mormons

Facilitation Team:

Mental health professionals and/or lay community members of different perspectives work together to foster a discussion between parents of LGBTQ and same-sex attracted Mormons in hopes of extending the arms of support around all parents in our community. The objective will be to share and build empathy and understanding for everyone.

Workshop Description:

This workshop is specifically designed for parents of LGBT/SSA children, although other family members might also find it beneficial. The workshop will involve an interactive discussion among attendees, facilitated by two parents who have LGBT/SSA children themselves. This workshop will give parents an opportunity to ask questions, address difficult challenges, and share their personal experiences with each other. Some of the issues to be addressed will include:

  • How do you reconcile your belief in the church with your beliefs about what it means to have an LGBT/SSA child?
  • How do you support your child if they choose a path you fear may be harmful in some way?
  • How do you respond if you experience tension between your own faith and testimony and the church’s position on LGBT/SSA issues?
  • How can you help your fellow members and local leaders better understand and support your LGBT/SSA child?

This is an Affinity Group Dialogue Workshop.
