Circling the Wagons position on Appropriate Therapeutic Responses to Sexual Orientation

We support therapeutic approaches that align with the major scientific, mental-health organizations, mainly to hold an LGBTQ-affirmative viewpoint that same-sex attractions per se do not indicate a mental illness or development disorder but that sexual and gender minorities benefit from interventions that counteract stigma (e.g., homophobia, heterosexism, sexism, racism). Our best efforts seem to not be in trying to change a person's sexual orientation but in helping that individual explore what fits best for them and develop skills to manage discrimination and live positively.
